The question of whether events in Gaza amount to genocide has caused public debate and raises concerns about the relationship between law and politics. What is the likely outcome of the process? Which political risks do the institutions upholding international law face by pursuing the case?Läs mer >>On January 11 and 12, 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) began proceedings for South Africa's lawsuit against Israel, alleging violations of the UN Genocide Convention in Gaza. Two weeks later, the ICJ issued provisional measures as it anticipates a final verdict, which will take years. Professor Tomislav Duli? will discuss the ICJ case, providing an overview of the relevant laws and the arguments by both sides. He will also examine the merits of the case in relation to previous rulings by the ICJ and similar institutions. Additionally, the seminar will explore the complex relationship between international law and global politics, highlighting the challenges posed by the Gaza situation and other recent cases to the institutions that uphold international humanitarian rights. In so doing, he will shed light on the broader implications for justice and accountability in a rapidly changing world.
